For the Schultzes, promoting healthy eating and lifestyles in the Indigenous community is an intrinsic part of their work.

As a health psychologist by profession, Clinton is motivated to help people stay healthy. It’s one of the reasons why he and Lozen launched their Indigenous food truck Clinto’s Kupmurri.

Their menu features native cuisines like crocodile, emu and lemon myrtle iced tea, putting them on the map as one of the most unique food trucks in Queensland.

The Schultz’s journey hasn’t stopped there. They have just launched a new alcohol-free drinks range called SOBAH.

Clinton says, “It’s a play on the word SOBER and the other part we try and do is highlight the importance of Aboriginal languages and now the suffix ‘BAH’, for many of the language groups along the Eastern coast here means 'place of'.”

“So for us, it’s a play on words meaning ‘place of sobriety’.”

SOBAH was showcased recently at the Commonwealth Games, and includes three types of alcohol-free beer.

The beers include locally sourced native ingredients like finger lime and pepperberry.

“Our aim was to make a product that was as close as possible to an everyday normal beer. I really enjoy the taste of beer and that’s what I wanted to produce and I just didn’t want the alcohol,” Clinton says.

The beers are brewed using a special yeast that creates the flavour of beer without the alcohol.

“The yeast we actually use was found on the skins of grapes in NZ.”

“It actually doesn’t consume the maltose and it’s largely the consumption of maltose by yeast that produces the ethanol or the alcohol within beer, so because our yeast isn’t consuming that maltose, then we’re not getting the ethanol or the alcohol.”

It’s good news for people wanting to stay away from what Clinton calls the 'silly drink'

“I get to work day in, day out with the negative impact that alcohol misuse can have, and I’ve definitely lived and grown through it myself.”

“One of the drivers behind this for me was to produce an option for people who chose not to drink.”

Clinton's beers are taking off on the Gold Coast, though he hopes soon to grow the business worldwide.
