Sons of guns nominate for AFL draft

The AFL has released the official list of father-son nominations before the national draft.

After missing out on highly-touted prospect Nick Blakey, North Melbourne could pick up two sons of former Kangaroos players at this week's AFL draft.

The club has nominated Joel Crocker and Bailey Scott under the father-son rule and also put forward Tarryn Thomas, Matthew McGuinness and Rhyan Mansell from their Next Generation Academy.

Joel's dad Darren played 165 games for the Roos and is the coaching director at the club, while Bailey's father Robert played 113 matches for North.

As the son of John Blakey, Nick could have nominated to be taken by the Roos or Brisbane but stuck with Sydney where his dad is part of the coaching set-up.

The 195cm forward has drawn comparisons to Hawthorn star Jarryd Roughead and is a top-10 talent that the Swans have access to as part of their academy.

Other notable father-son nominations announced on Tuesday include, Oscar Brownless (Geelong, son of Billy), Rhylee West (Western Bulldogs, son of Scott), Kyle Dunkley (Sydney, son of Andrew), Matthew Neagle (Essendon, son of Merv) and Ben Silvagni (Carlton, son of Stephen).

Rounding out the list, Collingwood have nominated Will Kelly, the son of 1990 premiership defender Craig.

The Pies passed on Will's older brother Jake when he was eligible in 2013 and he has gone on to become a fixture in Adelaide's back line with 53 senior appearances.

Collingwood will also need to match any bids for impressive defender Isaac Quaynor, who is eligible as part of the club's academy.

The powerful half-back has drawn comparisons to Western Bulldogs star Jason Johannisen and Melbourne's Neville Jetta and is expected to draw a bid in the back half of the first round.

"They're the players I like to take parts of their game from," Quaynor said.

"Obviously Jason is a really good running player and likes to take the game on with his disposal and Neville is a really good one-on-one defender and doesn't lose too many battles.

"Those parts of those two players I like to try to implement into my own game."

The first round of the draft will take place on Thursday evening at Marvel Stadium, with the remaining rounds and the rookie draft to be held the next day.
