Asking for trouble, a cycling coach is, comparing a female rider to Yoda.

But when it comes to Amanda Spratt, Orica-Scott team boss Martin Barrass invokes the revered Jedi Master from Star Wars with the utmost respect.

Spratt is the rider to beat on Saturday in the women's Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road race.

The 29-year-old is the defending champion and has started the year in blistering form.

After nearly lapping the field in round two of the Bay Classic series, Spratt finished runner-up to teammate Katrin Garfoot at the Australian championships and then won the Santos Women's Tour.

Always well-regarded for her team spirit and cycling nous, Spratt has gone up a level this year.

Crucially, the self-doubt that once held back Spratt is gone - she is a rider at the top of her game.

"Picture in your mind what a very experienced and wise master would look like and one would probably come up with a character like Yoda," Barrass wrote in an email.

"Then open your eyes in the middle of an Australian national women's road cycling team meeting and before your eyes you will see Spratty - wise, powerful, short, but infinitely younger and prettier than the little green troll from silver screen fame."

Barrass also calls Spratt a "rider's rider" - the third generation of a Sydney cycling family.

"She is not a cyclist - she is cycling, all of it," he added.

But Barrass also laments that Spratt is not perfect.

"She still has a dubious habit of liking really cheap and nasty coffee, which in our line of work is akin to preferring to drive the beaten up Barina over the new Ferrari," he said.

Spratt and Garfoot will headline the Orica-Scott team for Saturday's 113km race in and around Geelong.

Dutch teammate Annamiek van Vleuten is another strong option for the event, which will feature live TV coverage for the first time

"We make no bones about it - we're here to try to win this race," Barras said.

"This race is, to my mind, the highlight of the domestic season.

"The name of the game for us is really about options, or opportunities."
