SuicideGirls bring burlesque tour to Aust

Australian entertainer Vorpal Suicide is performing as part of the Blackheart Burlesque tour which starts in Melbourne on March 12.

Covered in tattoos and sporting big heels and a tight black dress that barely covers her bottom, Vorpal Suicide might be mistaken as a bad ass and extrovert, but the burlesque dancer says she's actually quite shy.

"I might look a bit crazy, but I'm completely the opposite," Vorpal told AAP. "I'm really shy."

You wouldn't be able to tell by her Twitter posts and Instagram page - which are filled with provocative selfies - but maybe that's all a part of the act.

Vorpal, also known as Pixie Rose, is one of the newest Australians to join SuicideGirls, an online international community of alternative beauties, who have in the past performed with acts such as Guns N' Roses and Courney Love as part of their Blackheart Burlesque tour.

In March, about a dozen of the girls, including Vorpal, will tour Australia.

Vorpal became a SuicideGirl last June and shortly after went on to perform and host shows in the US before being asked to join the Australian tour. The former manager of clothing companies says joining SuicideGirls, has "boosted my confidence and changed my entire life".

For those who aren't familiar with the group, the name SuicideGirls might be a little misleading. Vorpal says the group is the exact opposite of what its name suggests.

"It's is all about being mind and soul positive, and not discriminating against anyone - no matter what shape or size or colour," she said.

"It's just about being who you are."

So what's with the name Vorpal Suicide?

"I'm a very deep person," she said.

"My favourite thing is Alice in Wonderland. The vorpal blade (in the story) is the most powerful blade in all of Wonderland.

"I dug as deep as I could into Alice in Wonderland and found that word (vorpal) and just fell in love with it."

The Blackheart Burlesque tour will appeal to anyone with an open mind, she says.

"You've got to love rock'n'roll and pop culture. You've got to love women."

The SuicideGirls Blackheart Burlesque tour begins in Melbourne on March 12, before travelling to Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Perth and Wollongong.
