Sydneysiders faced another rail fail

Sydneysiders have suffered a day of delayed and cancelled train services due to technical issues and urgent repair work.

A day of chaos on the rail network due to IT and other "technical issues" had Sydneysiders fuming and transport managers rushing to apologise and give assurances all was being fixed.

Delayed train arrivals and cancelled services led to packed trains and extended travel times for travellers, including those trying to get to major sports fixtures on Saturday evening.

The problem spilled over onto the roads with traffic congestion around many train stations causing even further delays for people trying to get places, including on buses put on by Sydney Trains.

Sydneysiders experience similar chaos in December and January when a new timetable was partly blamed for widespread delays and cancellations on the rail network.

NSW Transport urged people on Saturday to avoid non-essential train travel, warning of "large gaps in service" following technical issues and urgent repair work.

"The IT issue earlier today, affected key operating systems that provide visibility of trains and their locations," it said on Saturday night.

"All critical systems have returned to operation across the transport network."'

The problems started on Saturday morning, with delays on multiple services and the suspension of trains between the CBD's Wynyard and Central stations because of urgent overhead wiring repairs.

"Sydney Trains apologises to anyone affected by this issue and would like to assure them that we are working hard to return services," NSW Transport said.
