The last year of the decade is promising innovations, advancements and changes that will have ripple effects across the globe.

2019 will be the first year that, in the USA, Baby Boomers (born 1946 - 1964) will be outnumbered by Millennials (born 1981 - 1996). It's unknown how much of an impact this will make as in Australia, Millennial population rose above Baby Boomers back in 2017.

2019 will also be the year that half of the world's population will make its way online.

India's national GDP will rise above the UK's for the first time in history. However, the fastest growing GDP is expected to be Syria as the country attempts to bounce back from years of conflict.

China and Turkey will fight it out to be the home of the largest airport in the world. Beijing's mega-hub is predicted to have the ability to house 100 million passengers per year, paving the way for China to become the biggest source of tourists on the planet in 2019.

50 years after the USA first landed humans on the moon, China will launch an unmanned mission to the far side of the moon. Israel will also be getting in on the lunar action, launching the first moon mission that is not run by a government.

Space exploration won't be the only thing reaching higher limits in 2019; the legal cannabis industry is expected to grow by 40%, raking in US$18 billion worldwide.

While medical marijuana is legal in some form in most Australian states and territories, there's been recent talk about making it legal recreationally nationwide.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale outlined the party's stance last year which would bring Australia's recreational marijuana laws in line with countries like Canada, Spain and nine states in the US.
