Alright listen up Australia, Midnight Oil have announced they’re coming back for a reunion tour and it’s as if all those years they were on hiatus are forgotten years.
On their official Facebook, Midnight Oil said:
"We wanted you to be the first to know that the five of us are planning to do some gigs in Australia and overseas during 2017. It will probably be at least the end of this year before we know exactly where or when - but if you want to be first to hear about any dates, head over to bit.ly/MidnightOilMailingList and sign up to the mailing list. You can grab your free download of ‘Forgotten Years’ live from Canberra while you’re there and catch up on some other big news too. Hope to see you soon … from Bones, Jim, Martin, Peter and Rob."
While they won’t be hitting the stage until 2017, in the mean time you can start rehearsing your best Peter Garrett impersonation and let’s get to work on reuniting some more iconic Aussie bands BECAUSE NOSTALGIA.
1. Powderfinger
There was time there in the ‘00s where you couldn’t even step foot outside your house without wandering into a Powderfinger or Bernard Fanning gig. But these days, well, they turned out nothing like we’d planned and the years of constant Powderfinger shows are Already Gone. Please give us back the Aussie rock we deserve.
2. Motor Ace
Conversations about Motor Ace go something like this:
“You know Motor Ace.”
“Who?”
“Melbourne band made up of Patrick Robertson, Dave Ong, “Damian Costin and Matt Balfe?”
“Nah mate.”
“They did the theme song for The Secret Life of Us.”
“Aww fuck yeah!!’
Let’s have more Motor Ace and Aussie drama, together again at last.
3. Shakaya
What we need more of in this world is North Queensland pop bands and there’s no better way to kickstart that than to bring back the originals - two mates from Cairns (the home of Aussie pop tbh), Simone Stacey and Naomi Wenitong or as they’re better known Shakaya. In recent years, record companies have tried to get them on the phone but for some reason they keep hitting a brick wall (…that’s a 'Stop Calling Me' joke).
4. Sister2Sister (S2S)
Three words: AUSSIE. SISTER. POP.
These sisters were surely doing it for themselves as they won the hearts and minds of late ’90s kids everywhere. With there infectious hit, you guessed it, 'Sister', Christine and Sharon Muscat won over Australia and more notably scored themselves an ARIA award. Now that 17 years have passed since their last record they might be asking each other, what’s a girl to do? Well, it’s definitely time to get the family back together for a reunion tour.
5. Madison Avenue
How have we spent so many years without the band who can without a shadow of doubt claim the most iconic ARIA Awards performance (Axle Whitehead’s penis exposure included), Madison Avenue. Lead singer Cheyne spent most of their medley dancing around a glass of water in a “will they or won’t they” tug-of-war. They need to make a come back if only to answer the question of, “why?”
6. Killing Heidi
Singing about a barrier across a river designed to alter its flow characteristics has never been as grunge as when Killing Heidi released their mega hit 'Weir'. They even some how made colourful dreads look bearable (sort of). In between telling us all where the Fountain of Youth is located (seriously she hasn't aged), perhaps Ella Hooper could give her band mates a call up and give the Australian people what they want - A KILLING HEIDI COMEBACK.
7. Bardot
The original and the best. Every year the AFL doesn’t announce a Bardot reunion performance for the half time show is a wasted year. Every time the Logies announce some two-bit, flash-in-the-pan American touring artist as a special guest instead of a giving us a Bardot medley, Australia cries. FFS ARIA, let’s get ’Poison’ back in its rightful place at the top of the charts. Come on Simon Cowell, Mark Zuckerberg or Beyoncé, you have the power (probably), let’s make this happen.
