If Malcolm Turnbull’s government is re-elected on July 2, the coalition has promised to bring on a national vote on the question of legalising same-sex marriage.
As well as the cost of holding the vote – $160 million has been put aside – the government may also hand out cash to campaigners both for and against same sex marriage to encourage an open public debate.
In 1999 the government allocated $7.5 million each to the Yes and No campaigns for the republic referendum, which the No team ultimately won.
In today’s terms, that would be $11.8 million for each campaign. No money has yet been earmarked.
For an idea of what sort of anti-same sex marriage ads a plebiscite would likely bring to our TVs, we rounded up seven examples from Australia and overseas.
Some are cringe-worthy, some are bizarre, and seeing them all together you get the feeling many campaigners have a peculiar fetish for info-graphics and voice overs.
Check them out.
