It's eight years to the day from when former prime minister Julia Gillard gave her famous misogyny speech in parliament.
Given the timing of the anniversary, a day after the US vice-presidential debate, some Australians have drawn comparisons with US vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris' performance on the night.
During the debate Harris, the former attorney general of California, pointedly said to vice-president Mike Pence, "I won't be lectured by the Vice President on law enforcement."
Commentator Peter FitzSimon's took to Twitter to add that he thought Harris borrowed from Gillard's copybook.
Gillard became the first woman to become prime minister in 2010, and if elected in November Harris would become the first woman of colour running for national office.
FitzSimon wasn’t the only one drawing comparisons between Harris’ performance and Gillard’s speech.
As the debate went on Harris used the phrase “I will not be lectured” another time, and people feverishly live-tweeting the debate were definitely here for that kind of content.
On Friday morning, Labor MP Tanya Plibersek shared on Twitter how much speech impacted her. She said, “I can't let this day pass without reflecting on one of Julia Gillard's most memorable moments as Prime Minister.”
Earlier this year, the speech was given a second life on TikTok with young teens who began posting dance remix videos incorporating the speech.
And now it’s found its way to the US debate stage. But Kelly Astrology wants you all to know the two women have more in common than just their choice of words.
