Australia’s Uncanny Valley team has won the competition to create a hit Eurovision song using artificial intelligence.
Dutch broadcaster, VPRO came up with the idea for a new AI led, remote Eurovision-style contest.
The winning song from the Australian team , ‘Beautiful the World’, was inspired by the recovery of nature from the country’s horrific bushfire season earlier this year.
Speaking to The Feed ahead of the contest VPRO Editor, Karen van Dijk said, "The idea is to create a song together with artificial intelligence, put a lot of data into a computer and see if it can generate ideas or perhaps a melody and lyrics for a Eurovision kind of song."
Charlton Hill from Uncanny Valley grew up watching Eurovision, and told The Feed it was the best “place to hold an AI song contest because it's such a unique avant garde world."
"When [our AI] came up with some pretty bonkers kind of stuff, we left a lot of it in because it's perfect Eurovision," he said.
The winner was awarded from a mix of public votes and a panel of AI experts.
The public voted in droves for Beautiful the World. All that was left were the decisions from the panel of AI experts.
The panel rated the song highly but opted to give full “douze points” to the German team, Dadabots. But the overall votes gave the win to Australia’s Uncanny Valley.
"The teams not only pushed the boundaries of their personal creativity, but also gave the audience a look into the exciting future of human-AI musical collaboration," the expert panel said.
After the contest, van Dijk, who gave birth to the idea said, "In my opinion, some songs would not be out of place in the official Eurovision Song Contest."
