Do we need a royal commission into disability care abuses?

Senator Jordon Steele John gave an emotional speech listing the names of Australians who had died due to neglect or abuse by the people paid to care for them.

The Prime Minister announced a Royal Commission into aged care earlier this week. But disability advocates - like Senator Steele-John - want it to include disability care as well. 

Recent data indicates that about 4.3 million Australians live with a disability. Rates are considerably higher among older people, BUT there are still thousands of younger Australians who have to navigate disability care.

Andrew Ryan spoke with Jan Fran and Marty Smiley on The Feed.

In 2015, WA Liberal Senator Linda Reynolds got bipartisan support for a Senate Inquiry into the issue. At the time it was hoped the National Disability Insurance Scheme would be the solution to getting young people out of aged care.

But five years after the NDIS was introduced, the total number in care has dropped just five per cent.

The Prime Minister says the upcoming Royal Commission will cover young disabled people in aged care, but not all disabled people.

Labor says if elected it’ll hold a separate, second commission into disability care.

So would including these kinds of stories in the Royal Commission into aged care make sure they finally are heard?
