Don't call me a bad-ass: Ruby Rose talks xXx

She may have become a serious Hollywood player thanks to a string of recent roles in blockbusters, but Ruby Rose isn’t down with being called a 'bad-ass' anytime soon.

While in Australia to promote her latest role in Vin Diesel’s xXx: Return Of Xander Cage, the 30-year Aussie told Marc Fennell that she doesn’t consider the term to a compliment.

“The kind of roles that I’m playing are very action driven, bad-ass roles and so everyone kinda goes ‘oh yup, she’s with Vin Diesel in xXx and she’s got a gun and she’s a bad-ass’ and I’m not really,” she says.

“I feel like 'bad-ass' is a term that gets used with women in not such a great way.

‘When I hear 'bad-ass' I don’t think I necessarily want a 'bad-ass' on the team, I want someone (who’s) kick-ass, competent, confident …

“When I hear 'bad-ass' I think rough around the edges, waking up hungover or she’s going to fight for you but she may be a bit late.

“All my characters are actually very skilled and professional and disciplined.”

Rose, who says she “always wanted to be an actor”, first gained national attention as a model and presenter in Australia before building an international following as a touring DJ.

To really punch home that she’s a Jill of all trades, she landed a breakout role in award-winning Netflix series Orange Is The New Black.

Being able to do what many actors spend their careers trying to do – successfully translate a small screen presence to the big screen – Rose’s charisma and ability to break the mould of the Hollywood stereotype has seen her fit a very unique niche.

It’s a niche that has landed her a string of dream roles, with starring parts in big budget action blockbusters like Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and John Wick: Chapter 2 all within the past year.
One film that doesn’t have the word chapter in the title, and her latest, is that of turquoise-haired assassin Adele Wolff in the third xXx film.

Yet there’s more to her character – all of her characters, in fact – than just their abilities to expertly wield a range of weaponry says Rose.

“With Adele her whole back story is that when she wasn’t in XxX... and they were off undercover and keeping low, she was being a humanitarian and an animal activist and shooting what you thought for a minute was going to be the lion but is actually the hunter – she was hunting the hunters.

“I love that’s what she was doing in her free time, using her skills to even the scores. Whereas I feel a 'bad-ass' would be, you know, robbing banks or something.”

Trading guns for funs, Rose is about to start filming on Pitch Perfect 3 next before teaming up with Jason Statham for giant-shark blockbuster Meg.
