From Hamilton to Disney: Lea Salonga’s top five live performances

She’s the singing voice of two different Disney princesses, yet Lea Salonga is best known for her award-winning live performances on the musical theatre stage.

Performing shows day in and day out takes a lot out of a theatre performer, but it also hones some incredible skills.

From Salonga’s breakthrough performance in Miss Saigon to her recent sold-out show at the Sydney Opera House, here are five her most dazzling live performances that demonstrate why she’s been one of the biggest voices in the bizz for over 25 years.

Sun and Moon from Miss Saigon with Simon Bowman
At just 17, Salonga landed the dream role of Kim in Miss Saigon following an international talent search. In 1989, she and Simon Bowman performed Sun and Moon on British TV show Wogan to promote the musical’s debut on London’s West End.

A Whole New World from Disney’s Aladdin with Brad Kane
Best well known as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, Salonga and Broadway star Kane went on to perform the film’s signature song A Whole New World at the 1993 Academy Awards. The Disney classic picked up two Academy Awards, including Best Original Song.

Burn from Hamilton with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra
A self-confessed fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton for both its musical genius and diversity on stage, it’s no real surprise then that when Salonga tour Australia earlier this year she busted out a number from the hit show. During one of three sold-out performances at the Sydney Opera House, she gave a moving rendition of Eliza Hamilton’s emotional number Burn (accompanied by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra).

Reflection from Disney’s Mulan
In 2000, Salonga performed at the Philippine International Convention Centre and sung a medley of Disney songs from the Aladdin, Hercules and Tarzan, as well as Mulan’s big ballad Reflection.

I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables
In 1995, Salonga played the role of Eponine in the 10th anniversary of Les Miserables in concert. Fifteen years later she appeared as Fantine for the 25th anniversary in London, and her performance of I Dreamed A Dream was mesmerising.
