Girls, You're The Worst, Bojack Horseman: TV is finally starting to get mental illness right

A new breed of shows is depicting formerly-hidden conditions truthfully.

Historically, mental illness hasn't been a big feature of TV programs- or when it was, it wasn't the most accurate or empathetic portrayal. Eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, post-traumatic stress... all are usually storylines that pop up and are quickly dispatched by the end of the episode, or lovable quirks rather than debilitating conditions.

However, with over 40 per cent of people reportedly suffering a mental health condition in their lifetime, and an unprecedented effort to raise awareness and destigmatise, finally we are starting to see a group of TV shows that are doing it right.

Marc Fennell rounds them up.
