Hidalgo County, Texas, is one of the most Latino counties in the United States – over 90 per cent of residents claim Hispanic origin.
Trump’s comments about Mexican immigrants and key policy of a border wall have led most locals to lean towards voting for Clinton. Republicans in this area are hard to come by – but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
“Personally, I'm not offended by it whatsoever because lots of it is true,” said Joquain, of Trump's comments about Mexicans. He's a local Trump supporter, and his mother is of Mexican descent.
“There are many people who come across the border who are bringing crime and rape for us as a nation... There's nothing racist about wanting to protect your borders.”
At the University of Texas, a group of Hispanic Trump supporters gather to hand out fliers and how-to-vote cards to fellow students.
“I think a lot of people do not want to come out saying that they're for Trump, but they're starting to,” said one girl.
All are quick to point out the difference between legal and illegal immigrants.
“In the 50s it was a little bit differently, but they came over legally and the majority of them do have their citizenship now,” said Miriam.
She is a naturalised citizen, but her father is still a Mexican citizen, and is currently in a US prison.
She supports Trump despite the knowledge that her father will likely be deported.
“Why should any other person pay for my family’s mistakes when they’re incarcerated and they're from Mexico?” she said.
Some of the most ardent supporters of Trump’s focus on controlling the border are those who work on it, but they also recognise that a wall isn’t a quick fix.
“To think that one single thing is going to solve the immigration problem is ridiculous,” said Marlene,a United States Border Patrol guard.
“We have a multilayered approach to securing the border and it's not the fence alone.”
