For a whole year, Mark Zuckerberg only ate meat he himself killed. He claimed, “Meat tastes better when you make it yourself, and it tastes even better when you kill it yourself!”
Zuckerberg is the high-profile face of a growing trend, and The Alpha Human is one of a growing number of Australian businesses cashing in on it.
For $1,300, The Alpha Human’s operators, Lovell and Barra, will teach you how to hunt deer with a bow and arrow on their property in the NSW hinterlands. Lovell describes his lifestyle retreat as an opportunity to “immerse yourself in the outdoor experience. It will cleanse your soul and make you a better person.”
“We’re the alpha; we’re the dominant species on the planet. As that dominant species, it’s been a part of our evolution to go and hunt and sustain our meat in an ethical sort of way.”
Rich was one of the participants on the weekend retreat. He’s also a yoga teacher. “One of the principles [of yoga] is non-violence. But I actually see factory farming as more of a violent act towards the animal than hunting.”

The RSPCA, on the other hand, takes issue with hunting, especially bow hunting.
“Abattoirs have certain standards and policies and procedures. It doesn’t guarantee there aren’t going to be any welfare breaches. But in terms of heading out into the field [with a bow and arrow] there isn’t anything to say you have to have a certain level of skill.”
Watch reporter Marty Smiley learn the ropes of bow hunting. Warning: this video depicts the butchering of an animal.
