Everywhere you look 2016 has been the year of Hamilton, the hip-hop musical depicting the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. It’s been parodied on Inside Amy Schumer, the shows creator and star, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has rapped for President Barack Obama and it’s been nominated for 16 Tony Awards.
The current season on Broadway is sold out until next year, audiences can’t seem to get enough of it and one well known pundit seems to think he knows what’s drawing in the audience.
"They just want to solidify their liberal bona fides and how cool they are: ‘Yea, I love Hamilton. Yea I get it, I'm hip.’"
Creator of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David, appeared on the Mike Lupica Show podcast, and offered up his reason for why the musical has been so popular, particular with white audiences.
“Yeah, Hamilton — it was pretty amazing,” David said to Lupica. “No doubt about it, it's an incredible show, but I do have this theory on a lot of the people that are seeing it.”

“I have a feeling there are a lot of white people who are saying they are completely blown away even though they didn't really understand half of the things the people on stage were saying. They just want to solidify their liberal bona fides and how cool they are: ‘Yea, I love Hamilton. Yea I get it, I'm hip.’”
Larry David speaking his mind on issues of race mixed with pop culture sounds like the plot for Curb Your Enthusiasm and we are so here for it if he decides to do an ninth season.
