“We get to see the other side [of the Melbourne Cup] – when the glamour's over and the excitement's gone,” says Anne Bailey, caretaker at Horse Rescue; a small NSW not-for-profit that rehabilitates and re-homes horses that have been abused, abandoned or neglected.
RSPCA, NSW Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust and the Animal Welfare League are mostly responsible for the re-homing and rehabilitation of ex-racehorses but Anne is proud of her small contribution to the cause.
Ensuring horses are fed and dewormed, their teeth are clean and their hooves are trimmed, are just a few of the things Anne and her team of trainers, vets and horse specialists provide for ex-racehorses.
“The horse's welfare is becoming more and more important, I think there's a lot more, vigilance as to how a horse is being treated … We're just a drop in the ocean what we do here ... but if we can help a couple, that's a good thing.”
