Eight time Grammy award winning singer, Rihanna, has announced a scholarship program to assist residents from Barbados, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Guyana, Jamaica, (as well as the U.S) in their U.S college pursuits.
“I don’t think it’s fair that children carry the burden of financial limitations at such a young age.”
The scholarships will range from $5,000 to $50,000 and will go to applicants who have been accepted into a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited four-year U.S. college or university for the 2016-17 year. And Rihanna couldn't be prouder of the opportunities that will come from them. “To be able to give the gift of an education is actually an honour,” Rihanna told USA Today. “Higher education will help provide perspective, opportunities and learning to a group of kids who really deserve it. I am thrilled to be able to do this.”
According to her foundation’s website, “The Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) was founded in 2012 by Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty in honour of her grandparents, Clara and Lionel Braithwaite. Grants funded by CLF are used to promote global programs in the areas that Rihanna is most passionate about including health, education, arts and culture.”
In a video talking about the foundation Rihanna says, “I don’t think it’s fair that children carry the burden of financial limitations at such a young age.”
And it looks like the work CLF is doing is already having an impact, with one recipient stating, “It’s more than just getting money to buy books. It’s getting money to make a life.”
Take a bow Rihanna.
