Telstra Tried To Give Their Customers Free Data And Well, They Kind Of Stuffed Up

Telstra are having a tough run of it lately. With a string of major network outages causing massive headaches for its user base, the loyalty from customers is on the fritz.

And rightly so: they've had a rough start to the year with at least three nationwide drop-outs causing havoc. From small businesses to everyday users, people are pissed off.

To appease their poor, network-hungry customers, the big wigs at Telstra decided to cast off the shackles of metered data and give everyone unlimited free downloads, but with a catch - only one day and for every single customer. Surely millions of people all trying to download byte after byte of free online content couldn't pose any issues for the network?

Well according to Telstra the day went off without a hitch. In a statement tweeted on Sunday (on probably unmetered data), the company said:“Today our customers consumed more data on our mobile network in a single day, than ever before. Previous Free Data Day record of 1,841 terabytes was exceeded by 4pm AEST. We’ll continue to monitor services and respond to give our customers the best possible experience.”

Sounds as though everything went smoothly and everyone was happy right? WRONG.

Instead of easing the burden on the long suffering customers, the free data day seemed to do the opposite.

And speeds were not… good.

Turns out giving everyone on the network a free data day might not be the best way to say sorry.

Of course, there were some who kept things in perspective.

Or perhaps this is a sign we should all log off for a little while?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
