The Democrats' response to #SpeakerSelfie couldn't look more different

The Democrats have responded to #SpeakerSelfie with a more diverse picture of the American population.

Republican Speaker of the House Paul Ryan’s viral intern selfie didn’t go down as well as expected thanks to the pointed lack of diversity among the sea of enthusiastic smiles.

The party’s political rivals have fixed that however, with the Democrats coming out with an intern selfie of their own that paints a very different picture.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson shared the image, taken by her intern Audra Jackson, on Twitter, as well as a more traditional portrait also taken on the steps of Capitol Building.

“Democratic House Interns organized to show the diversity of the Democrats,” she wrote.

It isn't difficult spot the difference when compared to Ryan's version which he captioned, "I think this sets a record for the most number of #CapitolHill interns in a single selfie. #SpeakerSelfie."

Labelled the 'least diverse selfie ever', #SpeakerSelfie has been widely criticised on social media and raised debate about how socio-economic status means many people don't have the privilege to participate in unpaid internships that could have a positive effect on their future career prospects.
