Australia was shocked last month when former Prime Minister Bob Hawke passed away aged 89.

Today, the Sydney Opera House was packed with political figures from both sides of the spectrum for Hawke’s state memorial - while hundreds of Australians lined the Opera House steps to say their goodbyes.

Hawke is being remembered as the "Don Bradman of Australian politics" who ushered in Medicare, supported unions and granted 30,000 Chinese nationals asylum following the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

Politicians, former politicians, media personalities and fans have taken to social media today to bid farewell to the longest serving Labor Prime Minister.
The Australian Council of Trade Unions also paid tribute to their former President.
Punters who attended today’s memorial have similarly taken to social media to express what the day means to them.

Hawke was laid to rest at a private family funeral shortly after his death.
