What one of Hollywood's most successful female producers has to say about feminism

She's the woman behind some of Hollywood's biggest success stories and Paula Wagner has plenty to say.

Starting as an actor turned agent, she's responsible for the careers of huge names like Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Matthew Broderick and Demi Moore.

Yet Hollywood heavy hitter Wagner didn't stop there, going on to become an executive producer in the film industry.

Some of the credits to her name include War of the Worlds, The Others, Jack Reacher, The Last Samurai and the first three films of the Mission Impossible franchise.

They're blockbusters in their own right, having made millions at the box-office and fuelled the star power of their leads.

Yet even more impressive is Wagner's success: despite the fact she's a woman fighting to survive in the very male and very sexist industry that is Hollywood.

"Of the top grossing films in 2014 I think five per cent were directed by women," she says.

"As women we have to help other women, not stand in their way"

"Something like 11 per cent were written by women and 20 per cent or so produced by women.

"Interestingly enough speaking roles were something like 30 per cent. The statistics are actually lower now than they were 10 years ago."

Her answer to solving the problem is rather a simple one, yet something that could make a huge difference to the women trying to break into the industry in the same way she did.

"First of all as women we have to help other women, not stand in their way," says Wagner.

"I think because there are only so many available seats at the table, women become more competitive as they're climbing up the ladder.

"So we have to help other women. We have to have an old girls network like there's an old boys network."
