Suzy Spoon is not your traditional butcher. She’s found a way to turn her vegetarian lifestyle into a business. Sausages, burgers, schnitzels - even lasagnas – Suzy Spoon’s Vegetarian Butcher was created to provide vegetarian and vegans with an alternative to the processed foods in the supermarket.
It’s not just vegans and vegetarians, there’s a lot of meat eaters that come and buy our product.
But for some, plants are still the food their food eats. Last week the French government passed a ban on the use words like ‘steak’ or ‘sausage’ in products that don’t actually contain any meat. MPs say it’s to avoid misleading consumers.
Unfortunately for France, we don’t think ‘cylindrical fermented soybean segments’ will take off anytime soon, but veganism sure is. As of 2017, Australia was the third largest growing vegan food market in the world - it’s expected to be worth some 215-million dollars by 2020.
It’s also getting some great free PR thanks to a whole heap of celebs including the one and only Queen Bey. (Because if we know one thing in this world, it’s that we should listen to one person and that person is Beyoncé).
Suzy Spoon is one part of a big push seeing veganism move into the mainstream. But for Suzy herself, the names aren’t anywhere near as important as the quality of the products themselves. While she doesn’t want farmers or butchers to be upset by the vocab, she thinks the words are actually helping out the consumers.
You know what to do with a fillet, the smoky rasher… everyone knows what to do with a sausage!
