Zac Efron: Anxiety, insomnia and rehab

What’s it like to be young and famous in an age when you can google yourself every morning? Marc Fennell asked Zac Efron.

The internet is a rough place for a hot guy*. If you’ve got girls around the world who want to lose their virginity to you… chances are you’ve got plenty of jealous dudes who hate you and every movie you’re in.

Zac Efron’s career was getting off the ground around the same time as social media. But the angle-faced teen heart-throb from High School Musical, now the tan, chiselled face of Baywatch, says, “I made the choice early on to stay away from it because I realised what it was doing to me mentally and I wanted to be at peace with myself.”

“It’s inevitable [to find negative responses]. It’s the only thing you remember."

“It was affecting other relationships, so that’s when I really had to go talk to my parents and we were all collectively like, ‘okay, the internet is not us. We are still us. We’re rooted in our foundations’.”
*The internet is an infinitely shittier place for women. There’s no debating that.
