Police are investigating swastikas and racial slurs painted near a popular restaurant strip in a multicultural suburb in Sydney's north-west.

The graffiti - which was found in an Epping laneway behind Chinese, Korean and Thai restaurants - reads "white power" and "skinhead".

The eagle symbol, used by Hitler's Nazi Party, also appears to be scrawled on the wall.

Local cafe-worker Madeleine Hawkins labelled the graffiti "grotesque."

"Initially when I saw it I was in shock and horror that people can be so awful," she said.

"The area is very multicultural and the fact it is in a common walkway is horrible."

Ms Hawkins said the graffiti had been there for at least three weeks but is now being removed.

Local police say they were not aware of the graffiti until Thursday afternoon when they received their first report.

NSW Police said in a statement that inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.

Almost one third of people living in Epping have Chinese ancestry and just over two thirds of the community have both parents born overseas, according to the latest census.

The incident comes a month after Swastikas were graffitied at Bondi Beach - an area with one of the country's largest Jewish populations.
