Uber bans NSW driver after alleged assault

A Sydney Uber driver has been permanently removed from the online platform's app after he was charged with indecently assaulting a 23-year-old female passenger.

An Uber driver has been permanently banned by the ride-sharing service amid accusations he indecently assaulted a passenger in Sydney's south-west.

The 52-year-old picked up the young woman at a house in Ambarvale about 5.15am on Sunday after she booked a trip home to Camden, police say.

It's alleged he indecently assaulted her during the ride, before grabbing her arm when she tried to leave the car.

The 23-year-old managed to flee and run to a nearby house and police were called.

The man was arrested several hours later and charged with two counts of assault with an act of indecency.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Picton Local Court on September 25.

Uber on Monday banned the driver from its app.

"This is deeply upsetting and has no place anywhere," a spokeswoman told AAP.

"The driver's access to the app has been removed and we are working closely with police to support their investigation."

It comes three weeks after a teenager was allegedly raped in the back of an Uber after a night out in Sydney's CBD.

The 17-year-old had used the ride-share service with two friends from the city to the eastern suburbs. But after he friends got out at Bondi, police allege the driver - who has since been charged - attacked the girl instead of taking her home.

The company stands by its screening of potential drivers, insisting it is in accordance with state law.

The process includes checks of vehicle and criminal records.
