Millions of Americans have gone to the polls for the 2018 midterm election.

Massive early numbers - more than 38 million ballots were cast ahead of polling day compared with fewer than 20 million in 2014 - sparked optimism that heavy rain in the eastern United States would not depress turnout.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate and 36 governorships are up for grabs.
