Police in New York City have removed a suspicious package sent to a building owned by Robert De Niro.

The package was sent to a Greenwich Street address in the Tribeca area owned by the Oscar-winning actor, adding to the pattern of explosive devices discovered on Wednesday at CNN and others sent to the homes of former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and CNN.

Police removed the package sent to De Niro before sunrise, according to local media reports.

De Niro has been a prominent critic of President Donald Trump.

The actor made headlines by yelling "F*** Trump" in June during the live Tony Awards telecast.

NBC's New York affiliate reported that the package was similar to ones sent to prominent Democrats earlier this week and was sent to a restaurant owned by actor Robert De Niro.

CNN reported that the package was addressed to the Hollywood actor.

The CNN bureau in New York received a device looking like a pipe bomb, leading police to evacuate the building, and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, said his office also received a suspicious package.

The spree of bomb alerts was kicked off Monday with a device found at the New York home of billionaire liberal donor George Soros.
Other targets included prominent African American Democrats - Mr Obama's former attorney general Eric Holder and Maxine Waters, a lawmaker from California - both outspoken Trump critics.

President Donald Trump accused the media of stirring up "anger" Thursday as the United States reeled from a series of suspicious packages and pipe bombs sent to prominent Democrats and actor Robert De Niro.
"A very big part of the Anger we see today in our society is caused by the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the Mainstream Media that I refer to as Fake News," Trump tweeted.

"It has gotten so bad and hateful that it is beyond description. Mainstream Media must clean up its act, FAST!"
