50 years ago twelve people lost their lives when a bulk ore carrier hit the Tasman Bridge and caused a partial collapse. Hobart was split in two and authorities scrambled to ensure easy access to the city for those living in the so-called "dormitory suburbs" of the Eastern Shore. One survivor has recalled his heart stopping escape from the brink - when at 9.27pm on January 5, 1975, a bulk carrier, the Lake Illawarra, hit the Bridge.
