A sombre marking of the 80th anniversary of D-Day landings in Normandy

80 years ago, members of allied forces stormed the beaches of Northern France - the first step towards ending World War Two and defeating Nazi Germany. It involved the largest naval fleet ever assembled, with more than 10,000 supporting aircraft. Over 3,000 Australians from the army, navy and air force participated in the landings on June 6, and would go on to serve during the Normandy campaign. Some of the few surviving allied veterans have returned to Normandy for a series of commemorations.
