Anthony Albanese’s Labor government has pulled off an historic consolidation of its power base to secure re-election in a night of extraordinary twists and turns. With counting to continue, the nation’s Liberal-National Coalition has lost at 20 seats in parliament and the opposition leader Peter Dutton has been ousted from his own seat by a Labor candidate. After their landslide victories three years ago, the Greens appear to have been pushed into the political wilderness in the lower house but will still hold the balance of power in the Senate.
