Australia to recognise Palestinian statehood in September

Australia is to recognise the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The government joins other international allies, but not the United States. There has been fierce condemnation at the UN of Israel's decision to expand its military operation in Gaza - criticism prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu flatly rejects. In Gaza, the IDF confirmed it targeted and killed a prominent journalist. Israel says he was a Hamas cell leader posing as a journalist.
