Days after opposition forces in Ethiopia launched an offensive against central powers in Addis Ababa, pro-government forces have turned the tables — claiming to have captured a strategic town in the northern Tigray region. Alamata, located 120km south of the regional capital Mekelle, is an important supply hub near Tigray's southern border with the neighbouring Amhara region. A four-year peace deal which ended a deadly civil war is now in tatters, as fears grow the violence could ignite a broader war in the Horn of Africa — already gripped by conflicts in Sudan and the Red Sea.
