Fierce winds and torrential rain as Cyclone Narelle makes landfall

Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle smashed into Far North Queensland this morning crossing the coast as a powerful category four storm. The system made landfall between the communities of Lockhart River and Coen on Cape York Peninsula with wind speeds of up to 240 kilometres per hour. Residents report roofs ripped off houses and trees flattened. The cyclone's impacts were experienced as far south as Cairns. Narelle remains a category two storm as it tracks near Aurukun and Weipa toward the Gulf of Carpentaria.
