First Nations women have made major strides at local government elections in Far North Queensland. In the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula areas, a record 26% of candidates who put their hands up for a seat on local councils were women. Many of them were inspired by a recent succession of women who have been elected to the top job of council mayor.
