French police attempt to clear roadblocks amid New Caledonia unrest

French police sent to New Caledonia have started to clear the main highway connecting Noumea to the international airport. The development has been welcomed by hundreds of stranded Australians who say help can't come soon enough. Violence broke out in the overseas French territory last week with some Indigenous Kanak people furious over a proposal in Paris to expand the electorate.
