Watchdog granted new powers over mergers

The Federal Government is seeking to push through the biggest reform on corporate mergers in almost 50 years. Currently around half of all Australian mergers and acquisitions are made by the largest 1 per cent of businesses, making them even bigger. Meanwhile, less than a quarter are voluntarily reported to the ACCC, raising concerns the watchdog may miss troublesome mergers.
