When bite is worse than bark: dog attacks

A snapshot of Australian dog attacks over the past year shows Staffordshire terriers are often the offending breed.

RECENT SERIOUS DOG ATTACKS ACROSS AUSTRALIA

* 61-year-old man killed and his wife injured by an American Staffordshire terrier in Melbourne's suburban Mill Park - July 10, 2019

* Man, 51, found dead with "horrific" injuries at his Nowra home on the NSW south coast, believed to have been mauled by his Staffordshire terrier after having a medical episode - June 10, 2019

* 72-year-old woman killed and her husband, 74, injured when attacked by their American Staffordshire terrier at Wilton, southwest of Sydney - May 16, 2019

* Man, aged 40, dies five weeks after being attacked by two American Staffordshire terriers at Tregear, in Sydney's west. A 39-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter were also bitten and treated for minor injuries - January 24, 2019

* Cyclist aged in his mid-70s is left with a gaping wound on his leg after being attacked by a Staffordshire bull terrier in Sydney's western suburb of Granville - November 28, 2018

* Three-year-old boy has ear partly ripped off in attack by a great dane at Newcastle - March 6, 2018

* Girl, 10, seriously injured by a South African boerboel at her Melbourne home - March 4, 2018

* One-year-old girl dies after being mauled by a rottweiler at Inverell in regional NSW - March 3, 2018.
