Every Monday, YouTubers Joey the Anime Man and Aki Dearest join forces to bring you The Anime Show, an hour that covers what’s hot, what’s not, what’s new and what you should be watching in the world of anime!

In the latest episode, Joey and Aki get deep into the sad and dark side of the anime industry, which all started with the recent passing of veteran animator Kazunori Mizuno, who died last month allegedly because of overworking.

This isn't uncommon in Japan; they have a word for the phrase "death by overwork," which is Karōshi.

Joey and Aki take a look at two major issues that contribute to overwork in the Anime industry. Firstly, there are less and less people entering the anime industry, meaning that the existing crop of animators are forced to work more to make up for the employee shortfall. However, the average salary for an animator is relatively poor, thus animators are forced to take on extra jobs in order to make a living.

This problem leads into the second problem, which is the increasing amount of anime series that premiere each season. Despite the gradual shrinking of anime staff, more anime series are being released each year, which in turn forces animators to work even more to meet deadlines.

Due to the gradual shift to online watching platforms from DVDs - which is a major source of income for anime production companies - as well as issues with piracy, Joey speculates that since the industry hasn't quite caught up with the rise of online platform demands or come up with an effective way to combat piracy, anime production companies are having to compensate by producing more and more content in order to make up for any shortfall.
