From countless records broken to an incredibly positive response from fans and critics from around the world, it's been a crazy month or so for BTS. But for the group's leader, Rap Monster, it all still feels new to him despite BTS being arguably K-pop's biggest boy group for the past two years.
In a new interview with Dazed, RM talked about a number of topics regarding BTS, what its been like over the past few months, and how he approaches the future.
Summarising the past few weeks in which BTS have smashed numerous records with their new album Love Yourself 'Her' and new single "DNA," RM simply says that he feels "like [BTS] are a balloon" and that he is still in disbelief of how successful they have gotten. But the BTS leader hasn't let fame or success get in the way of his artistic vision.
In describing BTS' new album, RM says that the group views the concept of their previous albums The Most Beautiful Moment in Life as chapter one while Love Yourself 'Her' is a sort of "chapter two" for the group. Looking back, it certainly appears that BTS have come full circle with their concepts having started with the gritty and ambitious 2 Cool 4 Skool before arriving at the idea of accepting the idea of loving yourself with their new album, and RM concedes that "I’ve had to accept that that everyone cannot love me. Because when there’s love there’s hate, when there’s light there’s dark. But it was really hard to accept as an artist that there’s a lot of people that hate me but, on the other side, there are many more people who love me. I think everyone goes through that."
It goes without saying that BTS are riding a wave of massive success at the moment, and with success comes pressure to continually perform. For RM, he feels the pressure but he revels in it because it is something he's been wanting to do for years, saying that "What’s happening is so much for me, and everything around BTS moves so fast, like making ten songs in half a year. Sometimes (it’s) too much, but I always remind myself of things back in 2007, I started this because I wanted to say something. There was a message inside me and I wanted to spread it as music, so when I’m in my studio writing I try to take it slow. I’m trying to take a deeper look, like what am I really trying to say?"
Despite having been in the industry for many years now, and having been together with BTS for quite some time, RM is still surprised today by his members. The one member who continues to surprise the BTS leader is none other than V, who RM says "His words are crazy and his English is crazy too. He makes new words and new grammar and he always surprises me. I feel like he’s quite good at English too because he can speak to everyone, he’s got confidence, he’s got the guts."
It's been a wild couple of years for BTS, but it certainly seems like this is just the beginning for something even bigger for the boys!
