What is podcasting?
‘Podcasting' is a blend of the words 'iPod' and 'broadcasting'. Podcasting allows you to automatically receive the latest episode or highlights of your favourite SBS programs. You can then watch or listen to the downloaded episode via your computer, or transfer them to a portable mp3 player.
All our podcasts are free, and you can stop subscribing to a podcast at any time.
What is an mp3?
MP3 is a popular audio file you can play on your computer or portable mp3 player. SBS audio podcasts are produced into mp3 files you can download for free.
Do I need an iPod or mp3 player?
Not at all! If you have access to a computer that can connect to the internet, then you’ll be able to download and play any podcast episode you like. The computer you use will need to have a media player (many PCs come with Windows Media Player pre installed), and you'll also need some speakers or headphones. The best thing about downloading a podcast onto a portable player is that you can then listen to them anywhere you like, nothing makes that commute go faster than listening to a good podcast!
Do I need special podcast software?
If you want to watch or listen to a podcast then you can download it straight to your computer, mobile or portable player. All you need is an internet connection. If you want to make sure you never miss an episode then we recommend subscribing.
To subscribe to a podcast you can use podcast software that you install onto your computer - such as iTunes. Or, you can subscribe by using online services such as My Yahoo! or Google. Subscribing via RSS feed is also available allowing you to subscribe to the 'feed' in a way that suits you.
Sounds great, so how do I subscribe?
To subscribe to an SBS podcast couldn't be easier. Simply click the 'Subscribe' button on your favourite programme's podcast page and select your preferred subscription method from the menu.
Subscribing to a podcast is no different to when you subscribe an email newsletter or magazine that arrives at your door every week. By subscribing you will automatically receive the latest audio or video from your favourite SBS programme.
Subscription is free and you can opt in and out whenever you like.
Subscribe with iTunes
iTunes is one of the most popular podcasting methods. To use iTunes you must first install the latest software which can be downloaded for free via the iTunes website.
Subscribe with Soundcloud
Subscribe with Google, My Yahoo!, Newsgator, Bloglines...
Rather than download software, you can also choose to subscribe with one of the more popular online feed readers. Most only require an email address to use their service.
Subscribe with RSS
RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and it’s really simple to use. You can copy and paste the feed URL into the podcast software or feed-reader of your choice and it will automatically check for new episodes without you having to search the site yourself.
How do I stop subscribing?
To stop subscribing depends on the podcasting software you are using. Check the settings menus in the service you’ve chosen or look for 'remove podcast', 'remove feed' or 'unsubscribe' menu shortcuts.
How much does it cost?
Podcasting is a free subscription service that allows you to catch up with all the SBS programs you love.
Listen online or download
Rather than subscribe to a podcast you can always listen online - or download the audio or video file direct to your computer. Visit the homepage of your favourite language program to view all the most recently published podcasts in web-form.
How do I listen on my phone?
Listening to podcasts is easy if you have a smartphone. You can get all your favourite shows on the SBS Radio app (available for free in the App Store and Google Play). Just click "explore" and browse by genre.
What if I don't have an iPhone?
On Android there are a variety of apps you can use, including Soundcloud, Pocket Casts and Google Play Music. You'll have to download one of them in Google Play: just search for "podcast".
The process is much the same as on an iOS device: either search for the program name in your podcasting app or hit the "subscribe" link on the program page in your web browser.
