Record 87 Australians selected for 2025 World Athletics Championships

Australian Athletics have assembled their largest-ever squad for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, with 87 athletes set to wear the green and gold in Tokyo.

Matt Denny, Jess Hull, Nicola Olyslagers and Gout Gout will all compete at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

UPDATE: This article was updated on September 5 after Nina Kennedy's withdrawal from the Australian squad due to injury.

The team combines Olympic and global experience with an exciting array of young talent that will look to continue Australia's golden era of athletics in Japan for the first time since the 2021 Olympics.

Nicola Olyslagers (high jump) headlines the squad fresh off her national record (2.04m) and title-winning display at the Diamond League in Zurich last week.

Fellow high jumper Eleanor Patterson will join Olyslagers in Japan's Olympic Stadium, as will medal hopefuls Matthew Denny (discus), Jess Hull (800m and 1500m), Kurtis Marschall (pole vault), and Liam Adcock (long jump).
The return to Tokyo carries significant meaning for Olyslagers, who, with Covid-19 protocols no longer in place, will now have the opportunity to compete in front of her friends and family.

“This season has been a great build up for Tokyo. I do want to do another personal best, but I haven’t put a limit on what that is because I want to trust God for the greater heights,” Olyslagers said via Australian Athletics.

"My life changed forever the last time I competed in Tokyo for the Olympics [when claiming silver], so even sharing that stadium this time with my family and friends will be a moment I’ll never forget."

Gout Gout, the 17-year-old in the midst of a record-breaking season, is another athlete looking to make an impact in Tokyo, where all eyes will be on his quest to reach the 200m final and challenge defending champion Noah Lyles of the United States.

Gout is one of several youthful standouts selected, with Claudia Hollingsworth (800m), Cameron Myers (1500m) and Delta Amidzovski (long jump) among them.
It's a squad that personifies the change seen in Australian athletics, according to General Manager of High Performance, Andrew Faichney, and one he hopes will continue to build on the momentum and mood surrounding the sport.

"We’ve witnessed a real shift, not just in performance, but in national relevance," Faichney said.

"This team reflects that change. They’re world class athletes with the results to match, but just as importantly, they’re carrying the momentum of a sport that has so much belief behind it.

"From podiums to grassroots, we’re seeing the influence of this generation of athletes. They’re showing what’s possible and I’m looking forward to seeing them carry the flag for Australia in just a few weeks’ time."
