The Swiss Cycling Federation announced yesterday the German-speaking city would play host after the UCI awarded Switzerland the event in September last year.
Switzerland last held the road worlds in 2009 in Mendrisio, the year Cadel Evans won the men's road race for Australia.
It has since hosted the para-cycling (2015) and mountain bike worlds (2018) and gets another run at the road worlds in 2020 near the UCI's home in Aigle, as well as the cyclo-cross worlds in Dübendorf.
This follows the exciting news Australia will host the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in 2022, in Wollongong.
This year the international peloton will chase rainbows in Yorkshire, England (road worlds) and Emmen, the Netherlands (para-cycling road worlds).
