Argentina Stats
· Argentina will qualify for the knockout stage with A) a win, B) a draw AND Saudi Arabia versus Mexico ends in a draw. If Argentina draw AND Mexico defeat Saudi Arabia, the Mexicans need to win by at least a three-goal margin to have the possibility of overtaking La Albiceleste. Note: when Argentina and Mexico finish level on points, the goal difference or goals scored tiebreakers will decide which of the two nations will go through.

· Argentina will be eliminated if they lose this game. Since winning the trophy in 1986, Argentina have failed to reach the knockout phase of the World Cup on only one occasion. They were eliminated in the group stage in 2002 (in the only previous edition hosted in Asia), despite beating Nigeria 1-0 in their opening game (they then lost 1-0 versus England and drew 1-1 versus Sweden to finish third in the group).

· Argentina also failed to reach the knockout phase at the World Cup in 1958 (fourth in their group), 1962 (third in their group), 1974 (fourth in the second group stage) and 1982 (third in the second group stage).

· Argentina have not lost their final group stage game of a World Cup since 1994, a 2-0 defeat against Bulgaria.

· Based on Gracenote analysis, Argentina are the favourites to progress from Group C with a 79% chance, ahead of Poland (77%), Saudi Arabia (32%) and Mexico (12%).

· At the 2018 World Cup, only Colombia managed to reach the knockout phase after losing their first group stage game. Colombia beat Poland (3-0) and Senegal (1-0) following a 2-1 loss against Japan in their opener. The Colombians were eliminated on penalties by England in the round of last 16.

· This is set to be the 999th senior appearance of Lionel Messi's career, for club and country. He has scored 788 goals in 998 games.

· Gonzalo Montiel will be suspended if booked.
Poland Stats
· Poland qualify with A) a win, B) a draw, C1) a defeat by at most a margin of two goals AND Saudi Arabia versus Mexico ends in a draw, C2) a defeat AND Mexico win but Poland remain above Mexico based on goal difference. Note: If Poland and another nation both end on four points and the same goal difference, the following tiebreakers will be decisive: 1) total goals scored, 2) head-to-head result, 3) fair play. Poland received four yellow cards, Mexico six.

· Poland have not reached the World Cup knockout phase since 1986 in Mexico (eliminated 4-0 by Brazil in the round of last 16). Poland also reached the World Cup knockout stage in 1938 (round of last 16), 1974 (third place) and 1982 (third place).

· This is the first time Poland have been in contention to progress to the knockout phase in the final round of group stage games since 1986. The Poles were eliminated after two matches in each of their last three World Cup appearances (2002, 2006, 2018).

· Poland won their final group stage fixture in each of their last three World Cup appearances (2002, 2006, 2018), but on all three occasions they had already been eliminated. The Poles progressed to the knockout phase in 1986 as one of the best third-place teams despite a 3-0 defeat against England in their final group game.

· Based on analysis by Gracenote, Poland have a 77% chance of progressing to the round of last 16. Poland had a 39% chance based on Gracenote's pre-tournament World Cup forecast.

· Robert Lewandowski (77 goals in 136 appearances) is Poland's all-time leading goalscorer and appearance maker. Lionel Messi had netted 68 goals after 136 appearances for Argentina. Messi netted once in his 137th appearance for La Albiceleste.

· Lewandowski scored one goal in his five international appearances versus CONMEBOL opposition. That goal was netted against Chile.

· Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski can become the first players to score multiple goals for Poland at a single World Cup since Bartosz Bosacki (2 goals in 2006).

· Kamil Glik (101) is one short of moving joint-third alongside Michal Zewlakow (102) in Poland's all-time leading appearance makers, behind only Robert Lewandowski (136) and Jakub Blaszczykowski (108).

· Matthew Cash, Przemyslaw Frankowski, Jakub Kiwior and Arkadiusz Milik will be suspended if booked.

· The most recent game between these nations was a friendly in Warsaw on 5 June 2011. Poland won 2-1 courtesy of goals by Adrian Mierzejewski (26') and Pawel Brozek (67'). Marco Rubén (47') netted for Argentina.

· Poland lost each of their last three World Cup fixtures against CONMEBOL opposition without scoring: 4-0 versus Brazil in the 1986 round of last 16, 2-0 against Ecuador in the 2006 group stage and 3-0 versus Colombia in the 2018 group stage.

· At the 2018 World Cup, Argentina failed to win any of their three games versus UEFA opposition. They drew against Iceland, and lost versus Croatia and France.

· Club teammates who can be in opposition in this match are Nicola Zalewski and Paulo Dybala (AS Roma), Matthew Cash/Jan Bednarek and Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa), and Wojciech Szczesny/Arkadiusz Milik and Leandro Paredes/Ángel Di María (Juventus).

· Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski have met three times in competitive matches, all Champions League encounters between FC Barcelona and FC Bayern München. They faced each other in the 2014/15 semi-finals (2 goals by Messi, 1 by Lewandowski) and the 2019/20 quarter-finals (8-2 Bayern win, including 1 goal by Lewandowski).
