Head-to-Head: England v Senegal
· This is the first meeting between England and Senegal.
· England (W14-D6-L0) are unbeaten against African opposition in all competitions. At the World Cup England (W4-D3-L0) have kept five clean sheets in seven matches against African opposition.
· Only one of England's seven World Cup matches against African opposition came in the knockout stages. They beat Cameroon 3-2 after extra-time in the quarter-finals in 1990. David Platt (25') and Gary Lineker (83' penalty, 105' penalty) netted for England.
· England's first and last games against African opposition resulted in their biggest victories. They beat Egypt 4-0 in a friendly in Cairo in 1986 and Côte d'Ivoire 3-0 at Wembley on March 2022. Ollie Watkins (30'), Raheem Sterling (45') and Tyrone Mings (93') scored for England in that 3-0 win. Mings and Watkins did not make the England squad for Qatar 2022.
· Senegal (W1-D2-L3) have won only one of their last six games against European opposition in all competitions, a 2-1 World Cup group stage win against Poland in 2018 with goals from Thiago Cionek (37' own goal) and M'Baye Niang (60'). They won four of their first seven matches against teams from Europe (W4-D1-L2).
· Senegal (W3-D1-L2) have won three of their matches against European opposition at the World Cup including a shock victory against World Cup holders France in the opening game in 2002. Pape Bouba Diop scored the only goal in that one.
· Teammates who could face each other in this game include Édouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly against Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher and Raheem Sterling (all Chelsea), Pape Sarr against Eric Dier and Harry Kane (all Tottenham Hotspur) and Nampalys Mendy against James Maddison (both Leicester City).

England Stats
· England beat Wales 3-0 in their last group stage match to finish top of Group B. After a goalless first-half Marcus Rashford (50', 68') and Phil Foden (51') both scored for England.
· England have progressed to the round of last 16 of the World Cup as group winners for the first time since 2006, when they were eliminated by Portugal in the quarter-finals in a penalty shootout.
· England have scored nine goals at the 2022 World Cup. It is the most for them in a (first) group phase. They only netted as many World Cup goals in total in 2018 (12) and 1966 (11).
· England have progressed from five of their seven round of last 16 matches at a World Cup. The exceptions were a 1998 defeat on penalties to Argentina after a 2-2 draw (David Beckham sent-off in that game) and a 4-1 loss to Germany at the 2010 World Cup.
· In 2018 Gareth Southgate's England beat Colombia on penalties in the round of last 16 after a 1-1 extra-time draw (Harry Kane scored a 57th minute penalty). All five players who took a penalty in the shootout that day are in this England squad. Kane, Marcus Rashford, Kieran Trippier and Eric Dier all scored. Jordan Henderson's penalty was saved.
· That penalty shootout win against Colombia was England's first penalty shootout success at a World Cup. England have lost seven out of nine penalty shootouts at World Cups and EUROs including in last year's EURO 2020 final against Italy at Wembley (Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed).
· England are the only team at this World Cup yet to receive a yellow or red card (Senegal 6 yellows). Hungary in 1986 were the last side not to receive a yellow or red card at a World Cup finals (eliminated in the group stage).
· Gareth Southgate (5) can win his sixth World Cup match as manager of England. Only Alf Ramsey (7) won more. Southgate is currently tied with Bobby Robson and Sven-Göran Eriksson (penalty shootouts classed as a draw).
· Marcus Rashford's second goal against Wales was England's 100th goal at the World Cup. Rashford (3) could draw level with Bobby Charlton (4) and Michael Owen (4) in joint-fourth place of England's top World Cup goalscorers.
· Harry Kane (6) is in second place in England's top goalscorers at a World Cup chart behind Gary Lineker (10). Kane has not scored, but made three assists in this World Cup. He could become the first England player to make four assists at a World Cup this century (currently tied with David Beckham; 3 in 2002).
· Kane (51) is second in England's all-time leading goalscorers, behind only Wayne Rooney (53).
· All five of England's last World Cup goals have been scored by players who play for Manchester clubs (Marcus Rashford 3, Phil Foden 1, Jack Grealish 1).

Senegal Stats
· Senegal beat Ecuador 2-1 in their final Group A game to leapfrog the South Americans and secure second place in the group. Ismaïla Sarr (44' penalty) and Kalidou Koulibaly (70') scored for the Senegalese.
· Senegal have progressed to the knockout stages for the second time. Their best World Cup performance was also in Asia (2002, Japan and Korea Republic). They beat Sweden on the golden goal rule 2-1 in the round of 16 before losing 1-0 by a golden goal to Türkiye in the quarter-finals.
· If they win this match Senegal would equal the best result by an African team at the World Cup in reaching the quarter-finals: Cameroon in 1990, Senegal themselves in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.
· Senegal can win three successive World Cup matches for the first time (2 back-to-back is already a national record), as many as they won in their first nine World Cup matches (W3-D3-L3).
· Senegal have never been involved in a penalty shootout at the World Cup and have lost two out of three at the Africa Cup of Nations. The exception was a 4-2 penalty shootout win against Egypt after a 0-0 draw in this year's final in Cameroon.
· Senegal's last nine World Cup goals have been scored by nine different players (including an own goal by Poland's Thiago Cionek in 2018).
· Sarr, Koulibaly and Youssouf Sabaly can make a record seventh World Cup appearance for Senegal. They are already the joint-leading World Cup appearance makers for Senegal alongside Idrissa Gueye.
· In 2020 Iliman Ndiaye had a loan spell at Hyde United in England's Northern Premier League (7th tier). The day after he made his Hyde debut against Grantham Town, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and John Stones all featured for Manchester City in a 4-0 FA Cup win against Fulham at the Etihad Stadium, only eight miles away (26 January 2020).
· Idrissa Gueye is suspended for this match after picking up two yellow cards in the group stage. Nampalys Mendy, Pathé Ciss, Ismail Jakobs and Boulaye Dia will be suspended for the next match if they receive a booking and Senegal progress.
