Mexico Stats
· This is Mexico's 17th appearance at the World Cup. They already hold the World Cup record for most participations without ever lifting the trophy. In second on that list are Belgium (13, not including 2022).
· Only Brazil (all 22, including 2022), (West) Germany (20, including 2022), Argentina (18, including 2022) and Italy (18) have participated in as many World Cups as Mexico (17, including 2022).
· Mexico have competed in every World Cup since 1994. They missed the 1990 edition after receiving a two-year ban from international competition for fielding overage players at the 1988 CONCACAF U20 Tournament (it was known as the 'cachirules' scandal).
· Mexico were eliminated in the round of last 16 at each of the last seven World Cups. This is a World Cup record for being eliminated at the same stage in the most successive editions of the tournament.
· Mexico's best performance at the World Cup is reaching the quarter-finals in 1970 and 1986, the two occasions they have hosted the tournament. El Tri were eliminated by Italy and West Germany (on penalties) respectively.
· The most recent occasion Mexico participated in the World Cup and were eliminated in the group stage was in 1978 in Argentina. They lost all three group stage games, including a 3-1 defeat versus Poland.
· Mexico (27) hold the World Cup record for most defeats (Argentina follow on 23). El Tri (98) are two short of becoming the third team to concede 100 World Cup goals, after (West) Germany (125) and Brazil (105). Note: games decided by a penalty shootout are classed as a draw.
· Mexico have not lost their opening match of a World Cup since 1994 (1-0 versus Norway in Washington, DC). El Tri have won their opener in five of the six World Cups since (drew 1-1 against South Africa in 2010).
· Mexico qualified for the 2022 World Cup after finishing runners-up to Canada in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying. El Tri scored only 17 goals in their 14 qualifiers, with only Raúl Jiménez (3) netting more than twice. Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was the only person to play in all 14 of their qualifiers. The most by an outfielder was 13 by Jesús Corona, but he misses the World Cup because of injury.
· Mexico lost four of their last nine matches (W3-D2-L4), including a 2-1 defeat versus Sweden in Girona in their final pre-tournament friendly on 16 November (El Tri's goal by Alexis Vega).
· Mexico have 16 squad members who play their club football in Mexico, the most domestic-based players they have had in a World Cup squad since 2006 (19). Monterrey (5) are the most represented club in the squad (they had no player in El Tri's squad in 2010, 2014 or 2018).
· Gerardo Martino was manager of Paraguay at the 2010 World Cup. They were eliminated 1-0 in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Spain.
· Martino is the second manager from Argentina to take charge of Mexico at the World Cup. The first was Ricardo La Volpe in 2006 (eliminated by Argentina in the round of last 16).
· Andrés Guardado is one of three players (alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo) set to play at a record-equalling fifth World Cup. The three players to have made an appearance at five World Cups are Antonio Carbajal (Mexico, 1950-1966), Lothar Matthäus (West Germany/Germany, 1982-1998) and Rafael Márquez (Mexico, 2002-2018).
· Guardado (180) is Mexico's all-time leading appearance maker. In terms of World Cup appearances for El Tri, Guardado is joint-second alongside Javier Hernández (both 12), behind only Rafael Márquez (19).
· Guillermo Ochoa is in his fifth Mexico World Cup squad. He had no playing time in 2006 and 2010, but played in all eight of El Tri's matches in 2014 and 2018.
· Guardado (180) and Ochoa (132) are two of the four members of the Mexico squad to have at least 100 international appearances, alongside Héctor Moreno (128) and Héctor Herrera (102). Raúl Jiménez (98) can join them during this tournament. Belgium (6), Qatar (5) and Uruguay (5) are the three teams to have at least five centurions in their 2022 World Cup squad.
· 40-year-old Alfredo Talavera is the oldest player at the 2022 World Cup. He was also in the Mexico squad for the 2014 and 2018 tournaments, but did not have any playing time.
