· This is the first time in World Cup history that the holders of the Asian Cup (Qatar) and holders of the African Cup of Nations (Senegal) face each other in a World Cup match.
· Qatar's 2022 World Cup squad consists entirely of players from their domestic league. Senegal have not included a player from their domestic league in their 2022 World Cup squad.

· Senegal have lost successive World Cup matches for the first time, and are winless in their last three World Cup games games (2-2 vs Japan & 1-0 vs Colombia in 2018, and 2-0 vs Netherlands).
· In the 2018 World Cup group stage, Senegal and Japan were level (behind group winners Colombia) on points (4), goals scored (4), and goals conceded (4), and the match between the two nations had ended 2-2. · Qatar became the first host nation to lose their opening World Cup match when they lost 2-0 against Ecuador on 20 November.
· Qatar had zero attempts on target in their defeat against Ecuador. At the 2018 World Cup, four teams failed to attempt a shot on goal in a game, including Saudi Arabia in the opening game versus hosts Russia (5-0 loss).
· The only host nation to remain winless in their first two World Cup matches was South Africa in 2010: 1-1 versus Mexico and a 3-0 loss against Uruguay.
· South Africa (2010) also became the only World Cup host nation to fail to progress from the (first) group stage. Bafana Bafana missed out on a place in the knockout phase on goal difference.
· Qatar joined England (0-0 in 1966) and Mexico (0-0 in 1970) as hosts who failed to score in their first World Cup match. No host nation failed to score in their opening two World Cup fixtures.
· Qatar have never appeared at the World Cup, but they are the only nation to have competed in three different continental championships. As well as the Asian Cup, they participated in the 2019 Copa América and 2021 Gold Cup (they will also compete in the 2023 Gold Cup).
· Qatar won the 2019 Asian Cup, defeating Japan 3-1 in the final in Abu Dhabi. Almoez Ali was the tournament's leading scorer on nine goals, a record for a single Asian Cup.

· Four members of the World Cup squad made their debuts for Qatar before they were confirmed as hosts of the 2022 tournament on 2 December 2010: Saad Al Sheeb, Abdelkarim Hassan, Abdulaziz Hatem and Hasan Al Haydos.
