The changes to FIFA World Cup qualification
The FIFA World Cup 26™ is on the horizon, and the tournament, which is set to be held in the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico, will bring a host of firsts. SBS will again be the exclusive Australian broadcaster for the world's biggest sporting event.
An expansion to 48 nations for the FIFA World Cup 26™ from the current structure of 32 teams will see growth beyond the normal countries seen at the tournament.

The increase to the number of teams has meant each region has seen an increase in their quota of nations that qualify for the FIFA World Cup™.

FIFA World Cup trivia: Alphonso Davies is the only Canadian to score a goal at a FIFA World Cup, opening the scoring in their fifth-ever World Cup fixture, a 4-1 loss against Croatia in 2022.

Saudi Arabia

How qualified: Saudi Arabia were third in the second round of qualifying behind Japan and Australia, but made the most of the third round chance, ultimately securing a World Cup berth with a 0-0 draw against Iraq as they topped their group.

FIFA World Cup trivia: Mohamed Al-Deayea holds the joint record for most goals conceded by a goalkeeper at FIFA World Cups, as much a tribute to the goalkeeper's longevity in seeing four World Cups as the fact that Saudi Arabia were very leaky at the back.
Their 8-0 loss to Germany as part of Al-Deayea's record is the largest in FIFA World Cups this side of 1974.
Qatar

FIFA World Cup trivia: Qatar are the only nation to play in a FIFA World Cup without qualifying for one, and went on to perform poorly in their home tournament in 2022. IR Iran

How qualified: Japan were the first nation to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, finishing comfortably top of their group ahead of Australia, with a 2-0 win over Bahrain securing qualification.

FIFA World Cup trivia: Yūto Nagatomo could enter a select group of players to participate in five men's World Cup tournaments. Currently, just six players ever have managed the feat - Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Lothar Matthaus (Germany), Andrés Guardado, Rafael Márquez and Antonio Carbajal (all Mexico).
Confederation of African Football (CAF)
Nine countries qualified as the winners of groups with direct spots, with the four best second-place finishers headed to a second round play-off for the one Play-Off Tournament spot for CAF.
Algeria

How qualified: As the clear favourites in Group G of World Cup qualification, Algeria only had an early slip-up against Guinea to really blot their campaign, as they qualified with a game to spare ahead of Uganda.

World Cup Appearances: 1982, 1986, 2010, 2014
FIFA World Cup trivia: In 1982, Algeria upset powerhouses West Germany on the opening day, but subsequent results meant that by the final match of the group Austria v West Germany, both teams knew that they would progress with a low-scoring win for West Germany. After West Germany took an early lead, the rest of the match was played out without contest.
Algeria protested to FIFA, who ruled that the result be allowed to stand, but it led to a revised qualification system at subsequent World Cups in which the final two games in each group were played simultaneously.
Algeria were the first team to win two games in the first round and not advance to the knockout stage.
Cabo Verde

They picked themselves up impressively from a disastrous AFCON qualifying, where they finished bottom of their group to beat out their more fancied rivals in Group of CAF World Cup qualification.

FIFA World Cup trivia: Cabo Verde have become the second-least populous country to qualify for the global finals, with just Iceland having a smaller population than Cabo Verde's 500,000 people.
Egypt

How qualified: Egypt were strong in Group A of African World Cup qualification, with Mohammed Salah leading the way for the Pharoahs. He took the scoring record for this African World Cup qualification period, and also the all-time record, reaching goal number 20 and surpassing Didier Drogba, Islam Slimani, Samuel Eto'o and Moumouni Dagano, who all have 18.
Egypt wrapped up their berth at the FIFA World Cup 26™ with a 3-0 win over Djibouti, leaving them with a game in hand.

Ghana

How qualified: As one of the powerhouse footballing nations of Africa, Ghana were shocked with their failure to qualify for AFCON, coupled with an early World Cup qualification loss to Comoros, and their coach Otto Addo had to resist widespread calls to resign.
They bounced back after that thanks to a well-timed scoring spree from Jordan Ayew, whose seven goals in qualification helped Ghana through to their fifth World Cup.

FIFA World Cup trivia: What is Asamoah Gyan famous for at FIFA World Cups? Morocco

DR Congo were the main thorn in the Lions of Teranga's paw, and Senegal's comeback from 2 goals down to win 3-2 in their matchday 8 fixture was ultimately the difference.

FIFA World Cup trivia: Senegal's first FIFA World Cup match was against France in 2002. The French at the time were the highest FIFA-ranked team in the world, had won their last two major tournaments, the 1998 World Cup and 2000 Euros, but 68th-ranked Senegal won 1-0 in one of the biggest upsets of FIFA World Cup history.
South Africa

How qualified: South Africa emerged from the the Group C, the 'group of death' in African qualifying, with a dramatic final matchday seeing Nigeria beat Benin, which allowed South Africa to take top spot with a 3-0 win over Rwanda.

Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) qualification
European qualification will see 16 nations qualify directly to the FIFA World Cup 26™, an increase of three teams from previous years.
12 nations will qualify as winners of their groups in the initial stage, with the 12 runners-up from the groups, plus the four best-ranked teams in the Nations League standings (from the remaining teams), set to compete in single play-off matches for the remaining four FIFA World Cup spots.
England

How qualified: England made short work of qualifying from UEFA's Group K containing Albania, Andorra, Latvia and Serbia, with a 5-0 victory over Latvia sealing their spot in North America.

FIFA World Cup trivia: Peter Shilton holds two FIFA World Cup records, most clean sheets for a goalkeeper with 10 (shared with Fabien Barthez), and oldest captain in a FIFA World Cup match at 40 years and 292 days, at the 1990 tournament against Italy.
Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) qualification
With the expansion of teams qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 26™, the OFC got a direct qualification spot for the first time.
The qualification process saw the winner from four groups qualify to an elimination tournament, with the final winner getting the direct qualification spot, and the runner-up progressing to the Play-off Tournament.
New Zealand

How qualified: New Zealand beat New Caledonia 3-0 in the Final of Round 3 of qualification to obtain the only direct qualification in the OFC.

FIFA World Cup trivia: New Zealand were the only team not to lose a match at the 2010 World Cup, recording three draws and not progressing out of their group.
Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF)
In a change of format from previous FIFA World Cups, there was no dedicated host country slot, with the slots of automatically qualifying host countries now taken from the quota of its confederation.
That means that just three nations will directly qualify from CONCACAF aside from the hosts, with two nations to compete in the Play-off Tournament.
Nations competed in a three-stage process with the winners and runners-up from the second-stage groups to progress to the third-stage groups, where the winners qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

28 out of 48 teams: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Canada, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Egypt, England, Ghana, IR Iran, Japan, Jordan, Korea Republic, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Paraguay, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, United States of America, Uruguay, Uzbekistan.
Inter-confederation play-off tournament
For the intercontinental play-offs in March 2026, a total of six countries - one from each of the five confederations aside from Europe, plus an additional one from CONCACAF as host confederation, will take part.
The play-offs will feature six teams, split into two brackets of three teams, with both bracket winners qualifying for the World Cup.
Each bracket will feature two unseeded teams facing each other in a semi-final, with the winner advancing to the play-off final against a seeded team.

FIFA World Cup 26™ Final Draw
The FIFA World Cup 26™ Final Draw will take place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC on 5 December (6 December AEDT).
President of the United States and Chairman of the Kennedy Center, Donald J. Trump, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the White House will announce the draw for the FIFA World Cup 26™ with team officials, ambassadors, fans representing the tournament’s Host Cities and global media representatives, amongst others, to unite for one of the significant milestones leading into the tournament.
42 of the 48 teams that will compete in Canada, Mexico and the United States will be known by the time the draw is made, with the final six spots to be decided via play-off matches in March, 2026.
Audiences in Australia can watch the FIFA World Cup 26™ Final Draw live on SBS and SBS On Demand, with a replay of the event leading into the Australia Championship Final on 6 December.
