Newsflash: 23rd January, Sam Bennett’s Comeback, Gravel’s New Wave and a Harder Liège

From Sam Bennett’s careful return to training, to gravel racing’s star powered rise, and a brutally demanding Ardennes classics route reveal, the early season storylines are already taking shape.

Sam Bennett is back on the bike after heart surgery last November, following an ablation for atrial fibrillation. Now with Q36.5, the 35 year old has resumed training under a closely monitored program, with no race return scheduled yet as health remains the priority after two difficult seasons.

Gravel racing takes centre stage this weekend with Peter Stetina and Kate Courtney lining up at the Low Gap in California. The launch of a new Rapha Cycling Club team at RADL GRVL, led by Cameron Jones, Romain Bardet and Nicole Frain, highlights the growing crossover of elite road and off road riders into the discipline.

The 2026 Ardennes classics routes have been confirmed, with La Flèche Wallonne sticking to tradition on the Mur de Huy, while Liège Bastogne Liège raises the bar, especially in the women’s race, described as the toughest ever. Strong start lists are assured across both races thanks to full WorldTour participation and a selective group of invited ProTeams.
